Root canals are a common dental procedure dentists perform to repair a tooth that has deep decay and damage. This saves the tooth so that it does not have to be extracted.
What It Does
Your dentist will remove the nerve and pulp from inside the affected tooth. The tooth is then cleaned and sealed. This eliminates damage and prevents the risk of tooth infection and abscess.
The Procedure
The dentist begins by getting X-rays so he or she can look for infection and see the root canal shape. The area is numbed and a piece of rubber is placed around the tooth. The dentist drills a hole into the tooth and removes the pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria and debris. Once all cleaning is complete, the dentist will seal the tooth.
Experience Afterward
Minor sensitivity is possible after a root canal. Any minor pain typically responds to over-the-counter pain medications. You can resume normal oral hygiene the same day, eat and go about your schedule as you normally do.
Your dentist might recommend a root canal if the damage or decay is too severe to be repaired with a dental filling. Learn more about what to expect when getting a root canal by contacting Ashley Dental Associates at 843-767-2600.
